It is a surgery to replace all or part of the hip or knee joint with an artificial joint called a prosthesis.
Hip Prosthesis
There are several reasons why your doctor might recommend hip replacement surgery. Candidates for this type of replacement surgery often have:
• Hip pain limiting daily activities, such as walking or bending.
• Hip pain that persists at rest.
• Stiffness in a hip limiting the ability to move or preventing leg lifting.
• Insufficient pain relief with the use of anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, or walking aids.
Knee Prosthesis
The most common reason for performing knee arthroplasty is to relieve severe arthritis pain. The doctor may recommend this replacement surgery if:
• You suffer pain due to knee arthritis that prevents sleeping or performing daily activities.
• The pain prevents walking and moving properly.
• Knee pain has not improved sufficiently with other treatment.
• Radiological confirmation of arthritic deformity in several joint compartments: tricompartmental osteoarthritis.
